Stronghold 3 Gold Edition Review 11 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I was shocked when it was confirmed that Stronghold 3 Gold Edition was to be released soon. It was more good news that it was free for those who own stronghold! I immediately started playing campaign of the core game again to understand the ties to Gold Edition before its release. This brief review will explain in detail what consists in the new complimentary content.

NOTE: I will not cover the new Multiplayer Mode.

I would like to state a few things before I head into the general things of the review. Do not get tricked by the eye-candy of the screenshots. Yes there are boats but they're just misc objects that you can't control like in Age of Empires 3 nor are they trading objects. They're just there. This campaign is really recommended if you beat Stronghold 3 first. Its really difficult even on Easy. I will move on explaining the content.

Blackstaff Campaign:

"We were stronger than he expected, so silverback fled. This is your chance, my brother told me; his castle was to the north, and he won't be ready for you. We marched north and took on his castle before he had the chance to catch his breath. His forces were strong, but we still had the scent of victory on our blood."

As soon as you start your stronghold 3 game you will notice the new blackstaff campaign banner right above the Historical seiges banner. This is a magnificent brand new original campaign that ties to the previous campaign while those events are happening.

The campaign is very difficult and sometimes even impossible to beat at higher difficulties. I recommend to start at easy. It consists of 5 maps that look like a walk in the park but turn out to be jigsaw's massacre, boobytrapped to the core with pitch ditches and man traps. You have no choice but to start all over after the majority of your men are incinerated and only a few troops left that are just not enough to continue. About 3 maps are sieges with the 'capture the keep' gameplay and the other 2 are the ordinary start-ups where you place your stockpile and granary to start your economy.

I will be honest. This will be frustrating. You WILL have to replay all missions to get them right. The paths look long and are packed with the meanest enemies such as knights and men-at-arms when you just have a few armed peasants, archers, and about 4 knights. But wait! there's also a shorter way with less troops! *march march march, incinerated* your useful troops are all burnt. Indeed this does sound frustrating but in the end it turns out to be fun.

The Campaign in general is a very superb campaign with new voices and even new beautiful 3D comic intros including new music. You will have fun even if it takes a couple of tries. Heinous bugs you say? I have not seen one. People may argue about the core game with the bugs since its more economical. You may pull a bug list as if it were the credits of a movie such as workers not working at quarries, veg gardeners relinquish job, knights not mounted right on horses and so on but you can forget about all that since there is practically no economical region in this campaign. Its more combat focused. Its all seiges. So get quick and act fast before archers on towers kill your useful man-at-arms and sacrifice armed peasants to burn in pitch ditches so the knights could safely pass unharmed.

Once again i conclude this side of the review to go ahead and try it if you havn't installed the game. Its worth it. It felt very fresh and new yet it still holds true to Stronghold 3.

Sieges:

After successfully attacking and defending all 12 Historical maps, it qualifies me to bring down the hammer and say the old ones were repetitive and persistent. On the other hand, the new seiges that were introduced within Gold DLC feel different and have that element which makes Gold DLC unique...traps to the core.

I conclude this final review with a recommendation of the game and its new content. If you have the game, install it. If you don't then what are ye waiting for? The new sieges make you rethink your plans twice and redefines the word Strategy. This is what Firefly makes. This is what stronghold means. Strategy.

Re:Stronghold 3 Gold Edition Review 11 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hi Firefly...

I own Stronghold 3 twice now and have two different pcīs running...

HP Workstation XW8400
3 GB RAM
DirectX 11
Intel Xeon Quad Core @ 2,66 GHz
180 GB free Harddiskspace
Nvidia Quadro FX 4600
768 MB DDR3 GRAM
1280 x 1024 32bit (60Hz)

ASUS P5Q with Intel Quad Core @ 2,66 GHz
4GB RAM
DirectX 11
50GB free Harddiskspace (Velociraptor 10000U/min)
ASUS EAH 3850X2
1GB GRAM
1280 x 1024 32bit (60Hz)

and the thing is also with the Goldedition (which is patch 1.10 with new missions)I have a lot of lag in Multiplayer with both machines.

And I think with those Settings I should have no problems at all.

I donīt complain about having a skirmish mode anymore, but I (and a lot more people out there) want at minimum a working multiplayer.

I listed the Bugs with the hope you donīt give up saying the game is finished. You did a great job from the beginning to now but the game needs still bugfixing, mostly in Multiplayer. I also think the building and troop limit is too less. No limit would be appreciating
but you should be possible to build at least 200 troops and 200 buildings.

Bug Nr.1 (MP)

The resyncing in Multiplayer is not working properly. "Waiting for player" and then he is out of the game......This happens very often.

Bug Nr.2 (MP)

Raising higher amount of troops leeds to lags.. That means your people, knights whatever stuck for few seconds and while battle troops are flying around sometimes. Those two things combined makes the multiplayer unplayable.

Bug Nr.3 (MP)

Knights on horses loose their horses if they go over bridges or its a difficult terrain.....the horse is not beside the knight...the horses are completely gone....
That means you have to advise the horses again to come out of their stables. Sometimes horses keep staying somewhere without beeing able to advise them to do something.

Bug Nr.4 (MP)

If you delete walls, there is still a piece of wall left, which you cannot delete anymore.

Bug Nr.5 (MP)

Troops or even the King are sometimes unable to move.

Bug Nr.6 (Blackstaff Campaign)

If Enemy is attacking in mission 2. You see big graphical artefacts of something like a spear, which is enourmous big and goes over a quarter of the screen and dissappears again.

Donīt know if I missed something out, but this are the most annoying bugs, in the game.

Please fix them and donīt stop supporting this game. Because if u fix those problems the game is great.

Hi Agentbob81

The lags are not caused by your machines. This is a known issue in multiplayer that are reported by alot of people with high end PCs. Note that V1.10 is the last patch.

Like a fool I waited months to buy the gold edition.

The game is bugged to hell.

The new missions are too difficult and not any fun.

NO skirmish mode makes this game useless, not all of us play online.
Skirmish mode would have made this game fun to play and explore, make maps and play the AI what more could you want? except the makers are obviously not gamers.

Go to Multiplayer no games available..

You cannot even do the basics that are in other games i.e. mark your troops or building with Ctrl + a number.

DO NOT do what I did and waste good money on such an basic game.

Shame.. I had such high hopes...

I can only agree with the above.

I played Multiplayer already. In the beginning you couldnīt even start a Multiplayer game. Now you can start one but it crashes before you finished and itīs full of Lag and you have building and troop limit.

I was waiting for A Stronghold Crusader Extreme with improved graphics and improved AI. Maybe a few things more out of Stronghold 2 like the Towers where you see the interior and fight in it.

Donīt waste your money if they do not change their minds and improve this game further.

Itīs right that other companys also release games with bugs in it...

but if they also say we donīt fix it anymore. I donīt buy games of this company anymore.

Who knows what in your mind will be the next "Gold" Edition.

"Bug Edition" would fit better to what is the status of the game.

Goodbye firefly

Itīs o.k. you robbed my money, but only once.

Can u please tell us what else is causing those problems???
Maybe I can fix it for myself....

Also it would be appreciating for all Stronghold Fans, to know what are the further plans for this game.

Will there be DLC in future.
Will there be further patches to get the multiplayer working
Will there be a further patch for knights loosing their horses.
Will there be a Stronghold 3 Crusader with a working Multiplayer and Skirmish mode.

Please tell us what are the future plans for this game.
Think you already sold a lot Gold Editions. So why not improving the game further.

Or ran firefly already out of money, and we donīt need waste further time with the game.

Hope you have an answer for us !!!!! @ Lucifer Crow

Hi Agentbob81

It is unclear to me what causes the lags. Official multiplayer system requirements have been stated on the recent patch of atleast 4 gigs of Ram and runs more effectively on high end PC's such as i5 and i7 CPUs.
I will answer some questions.

"Will there be DLC in future."
Nothing has been announced. v1.10 is the last planned patch as stated by a Firefly administrator in another thread.

"Will there be further patches to get the multiplayer working. Will there be a further patch for knights loosing their horses."

As stated above, 1.10 is the last planned patch for Stronghold 3

"Will there be a Stronghold 3 Crusader with a working Multiplayer and Skirmish mode."
Firefly has not announced any new games. Stronghold 3 is the most recent game developed.

If you have any other questions feel free to contact administrators or a moderator

Thank you.
