Open Source Stronghold 4 Years ago

I shiver everytime I think about having to yet again try and get my games to run under linux. With the years this has become easier and easier with the upgrades on Wine. But I still wonder, if any company has the foresight to break every rule there is about computer games, and release one of their older games into open source. While discussing this with my colleagues, all of them Stronghold fans, at the asocia(open source professionals associaton), we thought about what game would be a good candidate for this. Stronghold 1 came up on that list, after giving it a little bit more thought, we recognized Stronghold's potential for being an open source release, most importantly:
1)Being 10 years old, and having only $6 market price.
2)Having a strong and loving community.
3)Probably siphoning resources from its parent company, without really adding much revenue.
So give me your thoughts about this issue.
Is this the beginning of a interesting project?
Or am I just some cheap ******* who doesn't want to pay $6, but is too sensible to just copy the damn game from somewhere?

Just give them the 6 bucks... It's a great game.
I paid $10 for mine years ago and it is still my favorite game in my collection. I still have my old PC with the XP o/s set up just to play it.

Totally Agree, it's a great game.
I already own a copy, the cheap ***** part was just to add drama. It's not so much about money, but about knowledge, how much knowledge students or even professionals could learn from looking at how a fully mature game works. And how this people could contribute to build a better game.

A source release of the engine would be awesome. I believe in the philosophy that all game engines should source release after 5 or so years when they become "obsolote".
Techie-kinda fans like obsolete engines.
/me plays some DOOM

Imagine if one could make his own Stronghold-engine based game...
GPL it, Fireflies. You know you must.
