Gameplay

Q. How can I prevent fires from spreading?

A. Place wells, which you can find in the town buildings section of the interface. You may also want to try deleting buildings nearby to the source of the fire to stop it from spreading.

Q. How do I rotate the screen left?

A. You can use the hotkeys to do this. X to rotate the screen left or C to rotate the screen right.

Q. Can an object, such as a wooden wall, be removed and replaced with a stone wall?

A. Use the X button on the interface bar to delete the wooden wall and place a stone wall in its place. You get back half the resources used to build something when you remove it using the X button.

Q. My green popularity icon is solid green and has stopped moving.

A. This means that your population should be rising but is not, due to a couple of factors. These factors could be:
a) You have reached your housing limit and you need to place more houses before your population will continue to rise.

b) You have the housing space available but you have filled up the available space around your campfire and you will have to give these people jobs before more people will arrive at the castle.

Q. Why are people leaving my castle?

A. This is probably caused by your popularity being low. Ensure you have placed a granary (press G to locate it) and that you have food being produced. Also make sure you are not taxing your people too heavily as this can also cause people to abandon you.

Q. I have loads of iron but I'm unable to build swordsmen?

A. Certain missions may not allow you to build swordsmen. You may need to place an armourer, a blacksmith & an armoury as swordsmen need swords and armour in order to be created.

Q. Can my Engineers drop boiling oil automatically?

A. Setting your engineers on defensive will cause them to drop their oil when three or more troops are nearby. When set onto aggressive, they will drop the oil when one enemy troop is close by.

Q. I can't get access to my towers or turrets?

A. Ensure you have built a section of wall next to your towers and connected some stairs in order to access them.

Q. Why can't I place a wooden tower?

A. You need to place a wooden wall before a wooden tower can be placed. Wooden towers can only be placed next to wooden walls.

Q. How can I stop people from eating a certain food type?

A. Click on your granary, then click on the plate with the no entry icon above it and then click on the food type to stop your people from eating it.

Q. I'm having difficulty building my walls and seeing behind objects.

A. Press spacebar to flatten the landscape.

Q. My own troops are attacking my castle / I can't place things in a certain area?

A. You may have another section of a different player's castle placed within yours. While playing the map, move over objects on the screen with the mouse cursor. This will show the name of the player the object belongs to. If the object in question does not belong to you, you will have to destroy it before you can build your own in its space.

Q. Stone production is very slow?

A. Try placing more ox tethers next to the quarry that is having trouble producing stone. The further away you place the ox tether from the quarry the less efficient it will become.

Q. What do the monks do?

A. Monks do not possess any special abilities.

Q. Can I move my trebuchets?

A. No, but you can remove the engineers and build another trebuchet (if you have enough gold to do so).

Q. Why don't I have cows available when trying to fire cows from catapults or trebuchets?

A. Build dairy farms and when the cows appear in the farms they will be available to fire from your catapult or trebuchet.

Q. Can I avoid hop weevil, apple blight, rabbit explosion, thieves stealing from the granary, etc?

A. These events are unavoidable.

Q. Can the ducking stool affect the witch who steals your apples?

A. No.

Q. Can I repair the damaged stone towers?

A. Yes, click on the tower and the repair button should be available. If it isn't, the enemy is nearby and will need to be killed off before you can make the repairs. If you try to repair the tower but do not have enough stone you will not be able to.

Q. I have tried to put some soldiers onto a tower and then deleted the stairs to prevent the enemy going up the tower to my soldiers. If I select my soldiers and order them to go to somewhere else they come down from the tower even without stairs.

A. Your troops will appear on the ground if they cannot get down from a tower or wall. This was added into the game to prevent troops getting stuck on damaged walls.

Q. The computer will not siege my castle. A few macemen will be sent up, then some more, and after some of my men are killed, they just stand around and get killed themselves. After that, all of the crossbowmen will be sent up, kill all my front line men, and then stand around.

A. Place gatehouses in all of the walls that lead to the keep.

Q. How do I get gold?

A. You can get gold by taxing your people, selling goods at your market and/or killing another player's Lord in a multiplayer game.

Q. How can I destroy a tunnel once a tunneller has begun digging?

A. Destroy the entrance of the tunnel.

Q. I get a feature: is_string_not_defined. Component: meshes. file: d:\disk1\data2.cab. error: data error (cyclic redundancy check)

A. This error is usually caused by a damaged disk; you may want to try cleaning the disk first and then try to reinstall Stronghold. If this fails you could attempt to copy the disk to the hard drive. Using a program, such as this one to attempt to get the data from the damaged area of the disk: http://www.kvipu.com/CDCheck/

If all else fails return the game and get a replacement or contact Take 2 for a replacement: Click here.

You can get more information on this problem from here: http://www.softwarepatch.com/tips/cyclic-redundancy.html

1. Delete the config file. You will find this file in the following location - C:\Users\<user>\Documents\Stronghold

3. Re-run Stronghold and it may try to run at 800x600 you can then change resolution yourself.
